Process for the treatment (oxidation) of a gas containing hydrogen sulfide (H 2S) into sulfur, comprises contacting the gas with a catalyst comprising a support made of porous foam having specific Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface of greater than 1 m 2/g, preferably greater than 5 m 2/g, and an active phase containing at least a transition metal element.
