A method of ventilating and controlling the temperature of a room of a building 1 by passive / natural ventilation comprises selectively opening or closing apertures 2 to communicate external fresh air into a basement / cellar / space under the ground floor 3 to thereby heat or cool air in the basement 3. The air is passed from the basement 3 into the room above the basement 3 via apertures 4 in a floor of the room or ceiling of the basement 3, and exhausted from the room via a roof of the building (e.g. chimneys, stacks) 6. Air entering the basement 3 may be filtered. The basement 3 may comprise concrete fin walls to create a heat or cool store. Pumice stone may be spread over the floor 1 or placed on a grate to absorb moisture in the air (dehumidification). Typical use is for laboratories and fume cupboard extract ducts may travel up the chimneys 6. Ground source heat pumps located in the basement 3 may be used for heating or cooling of the air.
