PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structural discoloring material discolored by the sorption of a substance capable of detecting the kind and amount of the substance present in the atomosphere or a solution as a color change, and its manufacturing method.;SOLUTION: This novel structural discoloring material discolored by the sorption of the substance is constituted by a method wherein a light transmissive thin layer (e.g., metal layer) formed from a substance having high light reflectivity and having visible light transmissivity is formed on a substrate and, if necessary, after the surface thereof is processed so as to be capable of fixing a polymer thin film layer having visible light transmissivity and changed in thickness by the sorption of the substance to be sorbed, the polymer thin film layer is fixed and the light transmissive thin layer is formed thereon to form a structure having the light transmissive thin layer on both surfaces of the polymer thin film layer.
