PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of electrode catalyst powder for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell allowing mass production of an amorphous alloy without degrading battery performance; and to provide electrode catalyst powder for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell. PSOLUTION: This method is used for manufacturing electrode catalyst powder for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell through a dissolution reaction by hydrofluoric acid by producing an amorphous alloy from a mother alloy containing a constituent of an electrode catalyst for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell and by immersing the amorphous alloy in an acidic solution. The mother alloy contains (A) zirconium, (B) nickel, (C) one or more kinds of metals selected from platinum, ruthenium, palladium, rhodium and iridium and (D) aluminum as constituents.
