The structure design of electrodes catalyst layer for (unitized) Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Regenerative Fuel Cells (URFC) are required to modify balancing of diffusion media; gas flow, transport field, and electrons/protons should be carefully optimized to providing the efficient transportation between the electrochemical reaction positions. Therefore, the aims of the study is a survey of recent literature on electrodes catalyst layer with the objective to identify common components and design as well as the membrane assembly methods for RFC electrodes. The study is focusing on the improvement of electrodes as a better performing for bifunctional electrocatalyst at the oxygen reduction and water oxidation. However, the progress in regenerative fuel cells research have obtained better performing oxygen electrocatalysts that is able to enhancement the energy efficiency with longer time and less performance degradation over time. Regenerative Fuel cells using these electrocatalysts have a possible future as a source of green energy.
