PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pretreatment method for use in the saccharification of an empty fruit bunch, and a method of producing ethanol using the pretreatment method.;SOLUTION: The pretreatment method to be carried out prior to the saccharification of an empty fruit bunch (EFB) upon producing ethanol from the same as a raw material, is characterized by being carried out under a condition whereby the CS value calculated from the equation shown herein [in the equation, t represents a treatment time (minutes), T represents a treatment temperature (°C), and T_ref represents 100°C] falls within a range of 1.40 to 2.50, while controlling the treatment temperature, out of the parameters in a pretreatment reactor consisting of the treatment temperature, pH, and the treatment time, at 140°C or higher.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
