PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques whereby a disc-shaped subject can be recognized irrespective of the rotating position of the subject.;SOLUTION: The binary image of a disc-shaped subject is obtained. Pixels constituting predetermined concentric circles whose center is located at the center of the binary image are specified. A plurality of feature data not dependent on the rotating position of the subject are obtained from the pixels of the concentric circles. A table for managing 2K pairs of standard data about K kinds of fronts and backs which the subject may have is prepared. By comparing the feature data of the subject to each standard data, the subject is recognized.
