PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device which calculate correctly the remaining capacity or SOC of a secondary battery. PSOLUTION: First, as for a lead storage battery, the remaining capacity or SOC of which is known, the relational expression between the terminal voltage VSBSOC/SBand the discharge current is required beforehand(S1). VSBSOC/SB=aSBSOC/SBI+bSBSOC/SB. Namely, a first coefficient aSBSOC/SBand a second coefficient bSBSOC/SBin each remaining capacity or SOC are obtained from the data acquired by two sorts of different discharge characteristic examinations. Subsequently, the judgment of the remaining capacity of the actual lead storage battery or SOC is performed (S2). As the method, data table processing is performed about the obtained relational expression(S2a). The discharge current value of the actual battery is measured, and is inputted into the relational expression, so that the terminal voltage VSBSOC/SBis calculated(S2b). The remaining capacity or SOC is determined by using the measured terminal voltage and the calculated terminal voltage(S2c).
