The method for obtaining a sequoyitol-containing extract from a plant of the genus of Trifolium, Leguminosae or Ginkgoaceae, an extract obtained by the method and the use of the extract for the preparation of medicaments for treating diabetes and its complications, the method comprises the steps of extracting with a solvent, recovering the solvents to give an extractum, subjecting the extractum to two-phase extraction and column chromatography, collecting the fractions containing sequoyitol, concentrating, filtration and drying.
