A hinge mechanism for deploying a vehicle pedestrian protection system is provided, including a first hinge element, a second hinge element and a earn assembly. The cam assembly includes a cam and a retaining mechanism, where the cam is connected to the first hinge element and the retaining mechanism is connected to the second hinge element. The retaining mechanism is guided within the cam between a first cam position corresponding to the closed position and a second cam position corresponding to the open position.
