The present invention relates to a deck for a metal bridge including at least two longitudinal girders (1, 1?) connected by a plurality of transversal spacers (2) and on which rests a platform (4), and to a method of building a bridge span. According to the present invention, each longitudinal girder is built by butt-jointing a number of prefabricated metal elements in the form of tubular hollow coffers (10) of polygonal transversal section, each extending over a length (L) compatible with transport and lifting devices. At least certain coffers (10, 10?) of two neighboring girders (1, 1?) are connected in twos by a plurality of spacers (2), each composed of a metal tube. A method of building a bridge including at least one span supported by two spaced supports makes it possible to build an emergency bridge or to reconstruct partially damaged bridges.
