It has been observed that often therapeutic agents can not reach targeted areas within a tumor mass necessitating administration of such agents in enhanced doses causing undesirable side effects owing to their toxicity. The present invention attempts to overcome this difficulty by providing a therapeutic composition for combating hypoxic tumor cells in a tumor growth in a subject, comprising (a) an agent for inducing angiogenesis in the subject in an amount varying between 1 and 50g per day capable of promoting a desired degree of vascularization within the tumor or a selected portion thereof containing the hypoxic tumor cells and (b) at least on chemotherapeutic / tumor sensitizing agent in an amount varying between 150mg and 1000mg capable of producing an increase in sensitivity of the hypoxic tumor cells to a tumorcidal effect of a cancer treatment regime to which the hypoxic tumor cells are susceptible, wherein vascularization of the hypoxic tumor cells increases / enhances bioavailability of the tumor sensitizing agent to the said hypoxic tumor cells. The composition of this invention ensures enhancement of vascular supply within tumors, particularly tumors capable of maintaining their viability under hypoxic conditions. Induction of angiogenesis increases the delivery of anticancer agents to the hypoxic tumor cells within the tumors, and as a result, improves the effectiveness of the anticancer therapy in eliminating or reducing cancer by improving the cell kill in each cycle.
