The invention relates to a process for processing bovine hides used for making leather goods and footwear articles. According to the invention, the process consists in that the bovine hides preserved by salting are washed with soda ash up to a pH value of 9.5...10, afterwards there follows lime bathing, decalcification up to a pH value of 8...8.5, water pickling at a temperature of 22...25°C, wherein there is added a mixture of sodium chloride, formic acid and sulphuric acid, afterwards they are subjected to a pre-tanning operation with up to 3% basic chrome sulphate and base-treating in the presence of magnesium oxide, followed by treating the hides with water at a temperature of 30°C in the presence of a mixture consisting of formic acid, sodium formate and vegetal tanning extract, the hides thus treated are subjected to wet finishing in water at a temperature of 60...65°C, in the presence of a mixture of lubricating and emulsifying agents, are treated with vegetal tanning agents up to a pH value of 4.1...4.3, and afterwards are conditioned, wherefrom there result products having a content of volatile substances of 14...18% and a shrinkage temperature of minimum 70°C.
