The invention relates to 5-bromo-4-(bromomethyl)-2-methyl-1,3-tiazole of formula (II)(II)and a process for the preparation thereof which consists in that a reaction of thioacetamid with 1,3-dibromoacetone in organic solvent is carried out with subsequent dehydration of the formed residuum of 4-(bromomethyl)-4-hydroxy-2-methyl-4,5-dihydro-1,3-tiazol-3-ium bromide salt for the preparation of 4-(bromomethyl)-methyl-1,3-tiazol-3-ium bromide quaternary salt and separation of the desired product under the action of oxidizer.
