Multi-function control device (1) comprises an indicator (2) with a touch screen display surface (3) and a sensor unit coupled with touch screen. A fine graphic element (5) of the graphical elements (4-1 to 4-10) is formed as movable control element. The control element is operated by an operating object contact of the touch-sensitive local resolution sensor unit within the area of the graphic representation of the fine graphical element and a sliding movement of the operating object over the display area, without interrupting the contact of the sensor unit. The function or action linked with the fine graphic element are dependent on the current position of the operating object or on the last position of the operating object during the operation. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating multi-function control device.
