A unique class of chemiluminescent labels containingbiotin substitution that are suitable forchemiluminescent assays using inter alia a streptavidinand/or avidin conjugate. The chemiluminescent labels ofthe invention have the ability to bind to streptavidinand/or avidin per se or to streptavidin and/or avidinconjugated with an analyte. Label structures aredisclosed that have hydrolytic stability to meet the mostdemanding commercial assay conditions. Thechemiluminescent label compounds contain a biotinsubstituent that forms a streptavidin or avidin complex,having the formula:(see above formula)in which R1 is a divalent organic group; and R2 is anoptional substituent of the biotin and when present it isa divalent moiety containing at least 1 carbon atom; andR o is a heterocyclic structure directly bonded to thebiotin or substituted biotin, that has the capacity ofexhibiting chemiluminescence when reacted with hydrogenperoxide in the presence of a base. The inventionencompasses conjugates containing associated versions ofthe labeling compounds, assays and kits for performingsuch assay utilizing the conjugates.
