Embodiments of the invention provide a system for temperature control of thehuman body. The system includes anindwelling catheter with a tip-mounted heat transfer element. The catheter isfluidically coupled to a console that provides a heatedor cooled heat transfer working fluid to exchange heat with the heat transferelement, thereby heating or cooling blood. The heatedor cooled blood then heats or cools the patient's body or a selected portionthereof. In particular, methods and devices, includingsoftware, are provided for administering cooling or rewarming and controllingthe same based on a projected control temperaturemeasured by a temperature sensor within the catheter.
