The operating mechanism to activate a safety stop at an elevator, and apply brakes at the elevator cabin on the vertical guide rails, has an operating rod (11) and brake body (6) directly over or under or within the elevator cabin. The tie rod (14) is divided into an upper (15) and a lower (17) section, and a flexible section (16) with bending elasticity between them as a cable or wire, to allow an axial displacement between the sections. When not activated, the upper and lower sections are in a straight line alignment. A compensation spring (24) is a link between the operating and tie rods.
