The invention relates to a limiting device for short circuits in a low voltage inverter, particularly in a wind energy system having at least one current generator (wind wheel generator 6) for supplying a medium voltage network 100. For this purpose, electric energy is routed from at least one power supply cabinet 8,8' via a line strand 12.1,12.2' and a collective strand 12 to a transformer 70 which raises the voltage to a medium voltage level for supplying the medium voltage network 100. A medium voltage power switch 80 is present on the medium voltage side between the transformer 70 and the medium voltage network 100. The system is provided with an electric arc and short circuit monitoring system on the low voltage side. A current detection device 50 is associated with the collective strand 12. A multi-phase, particularly a three-phase, rapid short circuiting device 60 is disposed parallel to the collective strand 12. In the event of the presence of an overcurrent detected by means of the current detection device 50 and caused by a faulty arc or short circuit, a release signal is transmitted from the monitoring system to the rapid short circuit device 60, and a switch-off impulse is transmitted to the medium voltage power switch 80.
