The present invention relates to an artificial vegetation island having a multi-layer structure for improving the water quality of polluted rivers, streams and lakes and restoring aquatic ecosystems. In particular, the present invention relates to an artificial vegetation island having a multi-layer structure which allows aquatic plants to grow and at the same time creates natural lake, river and stream scenery and promotes ecosystem restoration and aesthetically pleasing designed landscapes and which, further, provides a self-cleaning action for polluted lakes, rivers and streams. In order to provide an artificial vegetation island having a multi-layer structure which can provide an ecosystem-restoring effect, in addition to an enhanced pollution-removing ability together with aquatic plants on the water surface, the present invention comprises at least one water-immersed, floating purification means made using a foam-ceramic carrier contained in plant-wrapping bandages or a synthetic resin net having a specific gravity of at least 1.1 which neither sinks in water nor floats towards the water surface.
