Method of protecting a portable data carrier from unauthorised use using PIN-based protection

The method involves producing a card-independent start personal identification number (PIN), before transmitting the PIN to an authorized user according to a formation specification e.g. date of birth, of the user. The specification corresponds to optically identifiable information. The PIN is stored in a portable data storage medium. The PIN is detected and provided to the user. An effective presentation of the PIN is made. A new PIN is subsequently preset as an effective user PIN. A determination is made whether the start PIN is a new PIN input by the user.
