ELECTRICITY SUBSTATION STANDBY POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM

The invention provides a substation standby power supply system (1) for operation in case of a network mains power failure. The standby power supply system (1) comprises an emergency back-up power supply (3) and one or more DC storage banks (4), which may comprise one or more high energy density storage batteries and optionally one or more additional storage energy means and which provide power to a DC bus (5) when required. During normal mains network operation the AC input (2) provides power to the AC substation loads (8) and to the DC substation loads (9). In the event of a mains supply failure, switching means (10, 11) switch to power supply from the emergency standby power supply (3) and the DC storage banks (4). The switching means (10, 11) switch the supply to the output loads (8, 9) back to the mains power supply (2) when the mains power becomes available again.
