Disclosed is a pretreatment method which enables the efficient collection of a sugar from a biomass containing both a cellulose and a starch. Also disclosed is a saccharification method employing the pretreatment method.Specifically disclosed is a pretreatment method for the saccharification of a biomass, which is intended to be carried out before the saccharification of a biomass containing a cellulose and a starch, and which is characterized by heating the biomass at a temperature ranging from 60 to 115°C without treating the biomass with an acid. Also specifically disclosed is a saccharification method which enables the saccharification of a biomass containing a cellulose and a starch with a saccharifying enzyme, and which is characterized by carrying out a heating treatment for heating the biomass at a temperature ranging from 60 to 115°C without treating the biomass with an acid before the saccharification of the biomass is carried out.
