The method involves controlling the supply circuit of a drive motor by a control device (80) for accelerating and braking the drive motor. An intermediate circuit is separated from the mains for electric braking of the drive motor. The intermediate circuit voltage (VZ) is controlled to a predetermined value greater than zero. An intermediate circuit capacitor (31) is fed in a generator-based operation of the drive motor. An independent claim is also included for an industrial robot with a unit for separating the intermediate circuit from the mains.
