PURPOSE: A defect diagnosis apparatus transforming signals of sound and vibration of a machine into image signals is provided to diagnose the failure of a mechanism by analyzing the feature vector of changed image signals. CONSTITUTION: A defect diagnosis apparatus transforming signals of sound and vibration of a machine into image signals comprises a sampling part(401), an image forming part(402), a feature vector extractor(403) and a signal determining part. Machine operation sound or vibration signals are inputted to the sampling part. The sampling part samples the signals at fixed time intervals. The image forming part produces images by mapping the sampled data on the images. The feature vector extractor extracts direction feature vector form the generated images. The signal determining part compares the direction feature vector extracted from the feature vector extractor with the feature vector stored in database in advance. The signal determining part determines the kind or the defective part of mechanism.
