The method involves controlling the total quantity of the diesel-fuel quantity in a control and regulation device (10). The quantity of the fuel is controlled by the lambda sensor in a servo loop. The quantity of the fuel is adapted by determining a nitrogen oxide-concentration in another servo loop formed as nitrogen oxide-control circuit. An independent claim is included for a device for exhaust gas optimization of an internal combustion engine.
