The method involves introducing a required quantity of recirculated exhaust gas into intake of engine via a high pressure exhaust gas recirculation circuit (14), until a determined power threshold of engine. The quantity of the gas admitted to the intake of the engine is decreased for the power of motor above the threshold. The decrease of the quantity of the exhaust gas is compensated by introducing recirculated exhaust gas into the intake of engine via a low pressure exhaust gas recirculation circuit (18) to obtain a required total quantity of the gas at the intake of engine.
