The method involves controlling the lifting of an exhaust valve so as to trap a defined quantity of burnt gas in a combustion chamber to realize an internal recirculation of the gas during a subsequent engine cycle. The distribution angle of an inlet valve is controlled corresponding to a phase shift of the lifting of the inlet valve with respect to the lifting of the exhaust valve so as to cool the burnt gas by delaying the opening of the inlet valve and to release the gas during a descending phase of a piston.
