The element has a heating body (11) provided with a base plate (12) that is made of an electrically isolating ceramics, where an electrically heating element (13) is embedded into the base plate. An annealing zone of the base plate is provided with a ceramic wear-protection layer (15) that is a tight layer made of silicon carbide. A layer thickness of the wear-protection layer lies between 10 to 50 micrometers and exhibits a crystalline structure. The protection layer extends within an area of a front section of the heating body projecting into a combustion chamber of a combustion engine. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a ceramic wear protection layer.
