Producing oxide based metal-organic framework materials using inverse synthesis, comprises reacting zinc compounds (I) with an acid having at least four donor atoms or an acid derivative of the acid having four donor atoms as a linker in the presence of non-aqueous solvent or dispersion medium, where A is the anion of the acid residue of an acid with two or three donor atoms per molecule.
