Process for storage or removal of a gas comprises contacting the gas with at least one sorbent comprising a porous metal-organic framework material, where the material absorbs the gas and contains at least one bidentate compound coordinately bound to at least one organic metal ion, the gas is carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonyl sulfide, 1-4C alkane, ammonia, ethene, propene, hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, methylsulfanylmethane and/or sulfur dioxide, the metal ion is ion of nickel and the bidentate organic compound is 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid derivatives. An independent claim is included for process for preparing the porous metal-organic framework material, comprising converting a reaction solution containing a nickel compound, 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid or its salt and a solvent mixture comprising at least one organic solvent and water, where the reaction is carried out at atmospheric pressure and the solvent mixture contains water (at least 3 wt.%).
