Steel weld seam for e.g. automotive applications incorporates more than specified minimum carbon content matched to adjacent material

A weld seam in e.g. an automotive application joins two pieces of iron-based material one of which has more than 0.3 % Wt. carbon. The carbon content of the material in the weld seam is between 1 % Wt and 2% Wt. The weld seam incorporates a proportion of austenitic material and the weld gap is 0.5 to 2 mm wide. The weld seam incorporates an additive introduced as a foil or powder whose carbon content is matched to that of the adjacent metal.
