The ergometer (1) has a crank mechanism (2) operated by an operator and sets in operation a fly wheel (3) against the effect of a brake unit. A control device is provided for the braking unit, which actuates the braking unit depending on the force initiated in the cranks (4,5) of the crank mechanism. The control device has a regulating unit with a reference value generator. The reference value generator detects the propulsive cranks and another reference value assigned to the propulsive cranks is supplied to the regulating unit.
