The gate drive (2) has a control unit for controlling a power circuit. The power circuit comprises a power switch (5) with three switching contacts (7-9) and an auxiliary contact (14). The switching contacts and the auxiliary contact are positively driven with each other. Output of the auxiliary contact is connected with a controller of the control unit. Directional contacts (17, 18) of directional relays (19, 20) are connected to two of the three switching contacts. A brake is directly connected with main voltage by a change-over contact. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling a power switch (2) a method for controlling a gate using a power switch.
