The method involves identifying a driver of a motor vehicle, and determining usage-dependent parameters during continuous vehicle operation. The parameters are evaluated based on a preset algorithm, and an index value indicating fuel usage of the driver is calculated and/or updated based on the evaluation. A suggestion for optimized fuel utilization is output by an output unit (24), where the suggestion is produced based on the value. The outputting of the suggestion takes place at explicit request of the driver and/or at an end of driving and/or before beginning of next driving by the driver. The usage-dependent parameters are condition and actuation speed of an accelerator pedal and a brake pedal, and vehicle speed. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for providing a suggestion for an optimized fuel utilization of a motor vehicle comprising sensors for determining a value necessary for a suggestion providing method.
