The method involves retrieving a set of velocity profiles for a traveling section (A) that lays ahead a motor car (2), where each velocity profile indicates a progression of velocity of the motor car along the traveling section. A most probable velocity profile for the traveling section is determined from the set of velocity profiles. An optimized velocity profile is determined depending on the probable velocity profile according to a predetermined optimization parameter. A driving recommendation is signaled depending on the optimized velocity profile and a current position of the motor car. The velocity profile consists of data related to vehicle speed and position of the motor car. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a driver assistance system for providing a driving recommendation to a driver of a motor car or for automatically operating the motor car (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for providing a driving recommendation to a driver of a motor car or for automatically operating the motor car.
