To test at least one shock absorber installed in a motor vehicle (4), the wheels of one axle are positioned on the oscillation plates (6) at a test stand (2). At least one wheel is vibrated with a frequency in the range of the characteristic frequency of the body and is then altered to pass through the characteristic frequency to register the wheel and body oscillation amplitudes during the change. The maximum amplitude ratio is determined of the oscillation amplitudes to the damping mass for comparison with a reference damping mass. A deviation from the reference value indicates a faulty shock absorber.
