The unit (10) has a retractor module (14) with a spindle that is rotatably supported on an axle. A belt strap (12) is rolled on the spindle, where force (F) acts on the belt strap when crash is limited by a brake arrangement (20). The brake arrangement is implemented as an eddy current brake, which is coupled with the spindle using an adjustable magnetic field. The brake comprises a magnet unit and a disk unit, which is connected with the spindle in a torque proof manner, where the magnet unit is designed as an electromagnet unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a belt retractor unit.
