The hammer (1) has an anvil (3) to receive a strike, and connected with a tool (5) formed for striking operation. A movably supported hitter (4) moves along a striking axis (7) by translatory degree of freedom, and strikes against the anvil such that impulse is transferred to the anvil. A drive device (24) indirectly moving the hitter transfers the impulse to the anvil and tool by the hitter. The drive device has stator coils (13, 15) to move the hitter by magnetic field to transfer impulse to the anvil. The hitter produces own magnetic field by mutually opposite magnetic poles (18, 20). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electrically operated hammer.
