The method involves exciting a part of a traction rope (6) to oscillation, where the rope is guided over a traction drive (5). Oscillation generated at the rope is detected, and resonance oscillation of the excited part is determined. A parameter e.g. amplitude, of the generated oscillation is determined, and is correlated with an operating parameter. A lift cage (3) and counterweight (4) are arranged in a defined position before determination of the parameter. The oscillation excitation and oscillation measurement are concurrently or successively performed at the rope and/or part of rope. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a measuring device for determining a parameter of a lift system (2) a computer program product comprising instructions to perform a method for determining a parameter of a lift system.
