The method involves occurring a selective catalytic reduction by adding a catalytic unit for nitrogen oxide reduction in oxygen-rich exhaust gases. An actual catalytic temperature is examined (100) whether it is larger than an empirically provided minimum temperature or not. The addition of the catalytic unit is accomplished if the actual catalytic temperature is larger than the empirically provided minimum temperature. The signal of the nitrogen oxide sensor is equated according to the selective catalytic reduction catalyzer corresponds to the actual nitrogen oxide concentration. An independent claim is also included for a device for adapting a selective catalytic reduction catalyze system of an internal-combustion engine, particularly a motor vehicle.
