The adjustable steering column has a steering column body (1) for bearing a rotary steering shaft (2). A clamping mechanism is provided for converting a continuous adjustability of the steering shaft along a longitudinal direction of the steering column body. An energy absorption mechanism is provided for energy consuming displacement of the steering shaft in an accident. The energy absorption mechanism and the clamping mechanism form a structural unit.
