The method involves connecting a tank (3) to cylindrical measuring containers (9, 11) with sensors (27, 29) in such a manner that the sensors emit a signal when a predetermined tank filling level is reached. The reach of predetermined tank filling level is announced if the sensors emit the signal in two sequential measurements. The measuring containers are emptied between the sensors. An interval time between the sequential measurements is steplessly adjusted. Connection of the measuring containers with the tank is disabled during emptying the measuring containers. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an overfilling protection device for monitoring a refueling process of a tank (2) a method for determining an emptied condition of a tank (3) a device for determining an emptied condition of a tank.
