The method involves activating a feed pump (11). A tempering device (9) for coating fluid is activated such that temperature sensors (12,13) detect temperature in a tempering unit (8) of the tempering device and temperature of coating fluid at a dosing device, respectively. Signals from the respective sensors are transmitted to a controller (16). The signals are stored and are evaluated by the controller such that a delay time difference between the signals of the two temperature sensors is determined. The dosing device is arranged downstream to the tempering device.
