In a method for producing biogas (G), biomass (F) is introduced into a fermentation container (2) sealed off from the atmosphere in a gastight manner and fermented there at least substantially anaerobically over a period of at least 5 years. In this way it is possible to safely and economically operate biogas plants with large-volume fermentation tanks (2) on an industrial scale.
