The method involves detecting an electrical control variable of an electromechanical actuator (10). Information about movement and/or an expansion of the actuator is determined by a model that characterizes operational characteristics of the actuator. The electrical control variable of the actuator is supplied as input to the model and the actuator is controlled based on the determined information. An expansion and/or a position and/or a speed and/or an acceleration of a mobile component (11) e.g. armature, of the actuator are determined by the model. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating an electromechanical actuator.
