The method involves reloading a piezoelectric actuator (12) of a fuel injecting valve (10) with a reference voltage on the basis of an output voltage, and with constant reloading current. Actual electrical capacity of the piezoelectric actuator is determined based on a reloading time, a voltage range during reloading and/or reloading current, and from a temporal change of an actuator voltage and the reloading current. The determined electrical capacity of the piezoelectric actuator is used for controlling the piezoelectric actuator. An independent claim is also included for a computer program comprising instructions to perform a method for operating a piezoelectric actuator.
