A performance-enhancing measure is detected, and the requested performance is reduced when the output performance is higher than the requested performance such that a given maximum performance of the drive train is not exceeded. An error message is generated and output with the detected performance-enhancing measures, and functionality of a vehicle is limited with the detected performance-enhancing measure.
