The method involves operating a starter (2) of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle when an engine starting signal is detected by a data bus (1) of the vehicle. The starter is continued to operate, until the internal combustion engine runs, even when the engine starting signal is not detected by the data bus of the vehicle. A starter controller (9) is provided for controlling the starter. The engine starting signal seized from the data bus is detected by the controller. An independent claim is also included for a device for starting a combustion engine of a vehicle.
