The method involves actuating a first starter unit (14) for driving an internal combustion engine (10) by a control device (18). A check is made whether a predetermined criterion is fulfilled by the control device. The driving of the combustion engine is stopped and a second starter unit (16) is actuated for driving the internal combustion engine when the predetermined criterion is fulfilled by the control device. Determined rotation speed of the combustion engine is achieved as the predetermined criterion. The criterion is changed depending on an ambient temperature. The first starter unit is designed as a pinion initiator. The second starter unit is designed as a belt initiator generator and an integrated initiator generator. An independent claim is also included for a system for starting an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
